What Is Folliculitis And How To Avoid It In Waxing.

Folliculitis is a common skin condition in which hair follicles become inflamed. It can look like a bumpy rash that can form after hair removal. It’s usually caused by inflammation on sensitive skin. It will typically go away on its own a few hours after treatment but here are some helpful handy tips you can do to help and prevent folliculitis.

*PREPARATION Prepping your skin prior to treatment is a must! On the lead up to your waxing appointment there are a few things you should be doing to make waxing a more pleasurable process for you. These simple things can make the world of difference, so if you are willing to take just a few extra steps, it will all be worth it.

*EXFOLIATION. Exfoliating a few days prior to your appointment using a gentle exfoliator/scrub will remove any dead skin cells and lift any stubborn hairs that lay flat. This prepares the skin and hair ready for the wax. Post waxing, you don’t want to exfoliate for the first week as this may aggravate the skin. When you start to see the hairs poking through again then you know it’s time to start giving the hairs a helping hand in coming through and preparing them for the next wax.

*MOISTURISE. Keeping the area moisturised leading up to your appointment will eliminate the amount of dead skin too. However, it is very important that on the day you do not apply any moisturiser/oils to the area. This can perform a barrier between the wax and the hairs meaning the wax won’t grip to the hairs. Post waxing, no perfumed products are to be used on the area for at least 24 hours. Any products that are soothing will calm and reduce any signs of Folliculitis forming. Aloe Vera or oils with calming properties would be best for this.

and remember…..Wear loose clothing immediately after and for the first 24-48 hours in the area that has been waxed. Rubbing of tight clothes can cause irritation and aggravate the area causing Folliculitis. Loose clothing will give the sensitive skin time to soothe quicker.

Waxing will never be the most comfortable treatment to have but these few tips and tricks can really change your waxing experience. Folliculitis can be off putting to having any waxing but it can be reduced and controlled so that your skin isn’t so sensitive to the wax. If you still find you are still finding you are really suffering with Folliculitis then we can discuss further with you what extra steps could be taken.
